Second Chance German Shepherd Rescue Houston (aka Second Chance Shepherds) is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of German Shepherd Dogs. Our goal is to find caring and responsible homes for our dogs and to educate the general public on the German Shepherd Dog breed. Second Chance German Shepherd Rescue rescues German Shepherd Dogs from all over the state of Texas, concentrating our efforts in the greater Houston area.

German Shepherd Dogs received into our program come primarily from local shelters, and many of them are victims of abuse and neglect. While in our care they receive vaccinations, heartworm prevention, flea control, spay/neuter, microchip, and treatment for medical conditions we are able to identify. They live with foster families that graciously volunteer their homes and hearts, providing our dogs a loving, safe, and secure environment. While in their care, foster families evaluate our German Shepherd Dogs' temperaments and help us select appropriate adoptive families to fit each dog's individual personality. They work diligently on socializing their foster dogs and tending to their physical and emotional needs. Without them, and the volunteers who support other aspects of our program, Second Chance German Shepherd Rescue Houston would not survive. Funding for our rescue group comes from private donations and adoption fees. We receive no governmental support.

Adopting a German Shepherd Dog involves the completion of an application and a screening procedure. The screening is conducted by volunteers and includes both a reference check and home visit. Completing an application is not a guarantee of approval to adopt. The purpose of the screening process is to assess potential adopters for responsibility, commitment, and ability to provide a safe and secure home. It is also our goal to make sure each prospective applicant has considered all of the pros and cons of owning a German Shepherd Dog and to ensure that this is the appropriate breed for their lifestyle and family situation. We believe our dogs have been through enough trauma in their lives and we owe them the best possible forever homes.
